Regardless of your hair type or other genetic factors, a healthy scalp is the foundation of any healthy head of hair.
Up until I began formulating my own products and learning how to maintain healthy PH levels within my scalp- it was constantly itching, flaking & inflamed.
Because my scalp was in a constant state of agony, it was impossible to reach my hair-health goals. Scalp discomfort had become so normalized within my own mind, that I accepted it as a part of life... and simply did not believe it would ever completely heal. I just kept slapping random oils on my head, in hopes of temporary relief.
For most of my life, I felt OKAY with my natural hair...but not 100% confident.
My hair began making its way towards its full potential once I figured out how to restore my scalp health.
THE SCALP RESTORATION HANDBOOK
STEP ONE: Internal health.
Often times, skin/scalp issues develop as our body's way of communicating an internal deficiency or imbalance.
As much as I would loveee to attribute my scalp progress to my handmade products alone... I definitely noticed a positive change in my scalp health & hair strength after embracing a plant-based lifestyle, cleansing/detoxing regularly, increasing my hydration levels, and supplementing with herbs.
STEP TWO: Natural products.
I grew up thinking something was wrong with my scalp, but really it was just rejecting the endocrine disrupting chemicals that are in most store-bought products... especially those that are marketed towards Black women anad girls.
It felt like my scalp was in a never ending allergic-reaction, until I started formulating my own 100% natural products. Today, I feel zero itching or discomfort unless my scalp is dry or simply needs to be washed.
STEP THREE: Hydration & moisture.
Being afraid to get my hair wet is propaganda I'll NEVER fall for again. Once I began viewing my crown as a plant that NEEDS moisture...she flourished.
I don't wear shower caps. I let the steam caress my locs everytime I get in the shower. I mist my hair with Crown Hydrosol or Cooing Hydrosol daily. I submerge myself in the ocean & waterfalls whenever I can. I don't hide from the rain.
Being afraid of water is one of the top reasons why so many Black women struggle with seeing growth in their hair.
After I wet my hair, I seal in the hydration with Crown Potion, Cactus Potion, or any other of my handmade oils that I have on hand. I cleanse my hair with my handmade shampoo (Sweet Pea Shampoo) & follow up with nutrient dense herbal rinses made right at home, in my kitchen.
STEP FOUR: Scalp Massage.
Not only are scalp massages a GREAT way to give yourself some much deserved TLC, but they also stimulate blood circulation to the scalp, which ( along with hydration and moisture ) creates the ideal environment for your hair to flourish. I recommend using Crown Hydrosol for Cactus Jelly for daily scalp massages. I recommend using Crown Potion or Cactus Potion immediately after misting the hair/scalp with Crown Hydrosol 2-3 times a week.
STEP FIVE: Treat your hair like somebody you love.
Due to colorism, texturism, racism & internalized misogyny- many Black women carry resentment towards their natural hair. It's not our fault, but it IS something that must be unlearned in order to create a healthy relationship with your crown.
All things flourish when they are handled with love & intention.
Love,
Yanna
